Synopsis

MATA is an intimate psychological tragedy centered on domestic trauma, isolation, and the devastating cost of village superstitions. Subjected to constant, sharp-edged taunts from her mother-in-law, Radha’s mental health rapidly deteriorates under the strain of unaddressed emotional abuse.

When sensory overload and despair trigger acute dissociation and panic, she pleads for medical help — only to be ignored. Instead of receiving psychiatric care, her severe breakdown is misinterpreted by her family and neighbours as the awakening of Mata, the Mother Goddess.

The film portrays the quiet horror of a vulnerable woman being stripped of her humanity twice: first through relentless domestic cruelty, and then by having her genuine medical suffering mythologised into folklore.

Mislabelled trauma

The central tragedy of the film lies in the refusal to see human pain for what it is. In environments where mental illness carries taboo or ignorance, acute trauma is often reframed as the supernatural. Rather than holding the household accountable for cruelty or seeking medical treatment for a fracturing mind, the community projects divine reverence onto an agonising human breakdown — abandoning the person behind the ritual.

Visual and sound direction

Visual metaphor. Earthy village tones contrast with sharp vermilion (sindoor), visually marking Radha’s descent from domestic vulnerability into an agonising psychological collapse.

Acoustic subjectivity. Sound design places the audience inside her deteriorating headspace — ordinary domestic clatter morphs into suffocating, overlapping taunts, then cuts suddenly to dead silence to mirror her dissociation.
